Pawel Glowiak Makes NCAA A Cut in 100 Butterfly; Jeff Gavin Takes Pair of Top Six Finishes

IUP junior Pawel Glowiak made the NCAA A cut time in the 100 butterfly and Jeff Gavin had two top six finishes to highlight the opening two days of the PSAC swimming championships being held at Cumberland Valley High School.

Glowiak turned in a time of 49.84 in the 100 fly in a time trial on Thursday to earn a trip to the NCAA Division II meet which will be held March 12-15 in Columbia, Mo. This is the time in as many years that he has qualified for nationals.

Glowiak broke the IUP record in the event, besting the time of 49.97 by Brad Stockholm in 1998.

Glowiak had the top individual finish for IUP on the first full day of the meet on Friday with his runner-up spot in the 200 IM in 1:54.70. Dylan Mudlo also scored in the event for the Crimson Hawks, placing sixth in 1:58.93.

Jeff Gavin had a pair of high finishes for the IUP men, taking fourth in the 1000 freestyle (9:52.99) and sixth in the 500 free (4:46.34). The 400 medley relay team of Glowiak, Mudlo, Jason Mohring and Josh Huger was third (3:32.55) and the 200 free relay team of Glowiak, Gavin, Mudlo and Huger was fourth (1:26.44).

On the women's side, Jen Price was the top IUP performer, taking third in the 500 free (5:08.49) and fifth in the 1000 free (10:38.55). Heidi Mitskavich was sixth in the 1000 free (10:42.86) and was 11th in the consolation finals of the 500 free.

Also advancing to the finals on Thursday were Abbey Doran, who was fifth in the 50 free (24.36) and Brittany Watkins, who took eighth in the 200 IM (2:15.43). Joining Doran and Watkins as scorers in those events were Kate Rowe (ninth) and Jordan Myers (15th) in the 200 IM and Galit Regev (10th) in the 50 free.

The 200 free relay team of Doran, Regev, Watkins and Melissa Kucharczuk was fifth in a time of 1:39.38 while the 400 medley relay unit of Rowe, Regev, Kucharczuk and Casey Beck was sixth in 4:06.47.

IUP is currently third in the women's team standings while the men are fourth. In the women's meet, West Chester leads with 234 points, followed by Clarion with 184 and IUP with 146. West Chester also has the top men's point total with 256, ahead of Clarion with 219.5, Shippensburg with 147.5 and IUP with 120.

The four-day event continues on Saturday and Sunday.
