After leaving IUP in 2003, Gironda was the head coach at Central Cambria High School for one year and the defensive coordinator for two seasons for the Johnstown Riverhawks of the Atlantic (now American) Indoor Football League.
A 1967 graduate of IUP and a three-year letterman on the football team from 1964-66, Gironda enjoyed an outstanding high school coaching career before returning to his alma mater in 1986. He spent seven seasons at Northern Bedford (1972-78) and six at Central Cambria (1979-84).
Including a 6-5 record at Central Cambria in 2003, Gironda had a high school mark of 93-38-5. His first four teams at Northern Bedford went 7-3, 9-0-1, 8-1 and 9-0 and captured three straight Mountain Conference championships.
His pattern of success continued at Central Cambria, where his 1983 and 1984 teams went 9-2 and 7-2-1, respectively, and claimed a share of the Big Nine Conference title in 1983.
Gironda was a social studies instructor at Central Cambria for 29 years during his high school and college coaching careers, retiring following the 2004-05 academic year.
Gironda and his wife, Kathleen, are the parents of four children. His son, Ray, earned four letters at IUP as a defensive lineman from 1994-97. The couple also has five grandchildren.
