A 1998 graduate of IUP and a three-year letterman on the football team, Jim Smith is in his 10th season on the coaching staff. After coaching the linebackers from 2002-05, Smith is now in charge of the quarterbacks while also coordinating the passing game. A year ago, Smith directed an offense that averaged 38.5 points per game, the second highest mark in school history. Quarterback Andrew Krewatch set IUP season records with 237 completions, 391 attempts and 3,100 yards while throwing 29 touchdown passes. Smith was a part-time coach in 2000 and 2001 while also teaching at Latrobe High School. He mentored the IUP wide receivers in 2000 before coaching the running backs and serving as passing game coordinator the following year. Smith was also a member of the coaching staff during the 1998 campaign. Smith lettered from 1994-96 as a wide receiver at IUP. During that time, he played in 18 games and caught 20 passes for 229 yards. After his playing days were over, Smith served as a student coach assisting with the wide receivers during spring practice in 1997.
