IUP began its spring golf season by finishing in fourth place at the Lonnie Barton Invitational held in Savannah, Ga. The Crimson Hawks had a two-day team score of 613 and two of the three teams they trailed were Division I schools. Towson won the tournament at 597, followed by South Carolina Beaufort (604) and Longwood (609). IUP, ranked No. 1 in the East Region at the conclusion of the fall season, shot a 298 on Tuesday, just one shy of the best team score of the day. Gavin Smith, the medalist at the PSAC tournament in October when IUP won the team title, tied for fifth at the Lonnie Barton at six-over par 150. Smith shot an even par 72 in the second round, one of only six rounds at par or better for the tournament. Leo Acklin, another all-conference golfer for the Crimson Hawks in the fall, tied for ninth, one stroke behind Smith at 151. Also competing for IUP were Cory Stelick (154, tied for 16th), Nic Milito (164, tied for 33rd) and Ryan Kennedy (170, tied for 46th).
