May 5, 2008 IUP shot a team score of 307 to stand in third place after the first day of the NCAA Division II East region golf tournament in Middletown, Del. The Crimson Hawks are four shots behind West Liberty State and three behind Fairmont State with two rounds remaining in the tournament. The winner advances to the NCAA national tournament May 14-17 in Houston. IUP is making its 12th straight appearance in the regional tournament and entered as the No. 1 ranked team in the East. The Crimson Hawks are seeking their first trip to nationals since 2005. Nic Milito and Gavin Smith are both in the top 10 after one round. Milito shot a three-over par 74 and is tied for fourth while Smith is tied for seventh after firing a 75. Three IUP golfers are tied for 21st at 79, including Ryan Kennedy, Cory Stelick and Leo Acklin. In the team standings, IUP is five shots ahead of fourth place Charleston and seven in front of Millersville and Clarion, its nearest competitors from the PSAC. Rounding out the field are Ohio Valley (317) and Concord (318). Two players matched par 71 at the Back Creek Golf Course. Jon Lodovico of California, competing as an individual, and Zack Rudy of Fairmont State hold a one-shot lead over Jared Schmader of Clarion. |
