IUP saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end against the same team it will play in the opening round of the PSAC playoffs on Friday at Miller Stadium. The Crimson Hawks fell in overtime at Shippensburg by a score of 3-2 to finish the regular season at 15-3 overall and 12-2 in the PSAC. IUP and Shippensburg (12-7, 7-7) will play in the second semifinal match at Miller Stadium on Friday at 4 p.m. The first semifinal will feature Bloomsburg vs. Kutztown. Both teams finished 11-3 in the PSAC, but the Huskies will be the No. 2 seed on the strength of two wins over the Golden Bears during the season. The winners of the two semifinal matches will play on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the PSAC championship. IUP had clinched the regular season title and the host role for the tournament with its win at Millersville on Wednesday. In Saturday's loss to the Red Raiders, IUP fell behind 2-0 on goals by Jamie Doughty and Danielle Haas before rallying to tie the game. Jess Velgos scored 23 seconds after the Haas goal to bring the Crimson Hawks to within 2-1 with 4:19 left in the first half. With 7:49 expired after intermission, Sylvia Guerrieri tied it up. Barbara Heemelaar assisted on both IUP goals. It stayed even until there was 4:32 left in the first overtime when Kim Davies scored the winning goal for the Red Raiders. Lydia Dolly made four saves for IUP while Amanda Houser stopped eight shots for Shippensburg. The Crimson Hawks held a 14-9 edge in shots and 8-6 in penalty corners. |
