Ray Schreiner scored two goals, including the game winner with 3:45 remaining, to lift IUP to a 5-4 win over Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover game Thursday at the South Campus Field. IUP (10-5) has won five of its past six games to move into the hunt for a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Crimson Hawks are ranked eighth in the latest Northeast Region poll, with the top six qualifying at the end of the conference tournament. Shippensburg overcame a 3-1 halftime deficit to take a 4-3 lead on a goal by Kellye Von Stetten with 11:32 remaining in the game, but IUP tied it up four minutes later on a goal by Kim Kowalski, her fourth of the season. Schreiner assisted on that goal and then scored the goal that put the Crimson Hawks ahead for good. Schreiner has five goals on the season. Carina Honeygosky and Sarah Romasco scored the first two goals of the game to stake IUP to a early 2-0 lead. Romasco, who leads the Crimson Hawks with 15 goals this season, assisted on the Honeygosky's sixth goal of the year. Gayle Kuntzmann got the Red Raiders (7-11) on the board, but Schreiner answered with her first goal of the game with 8:53 left in the first half to give the Crimson Hawks a 3-1 lead at intermission. Three straight Shippensburg goals by Alison Dowdrick, Rachael Jeffrey and Von Stetten gave the Red Raiders a 4-3 lead before the late IUP comeback. IUP held a 29-18 lead in the shots. Kelsey Dowling made eight saves for the Crimson Hawks and Beth Long stopped 15 shots for Shippensburg. IUP continues its six-game homestand on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against Lock Haven. The Crimson Hawks must win that game to keep its hopes alive for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming PSAC tournament and a first round home game. |
