IUP rallied from a 5-1 deficit to pull within one in the seventh inning but the Crimson Hawks left the tying and winning runs on base in a 5-4 loss to West Chester in the second game of a doubleheader Monday. The Golden Rams blanked IUP 3-0 in the opener. West Chester is 17-6 on the season while IUP dropped to 4-12. IUP trailed 4-0 after four innings before getting on the scoreboard for the first time in the twinbill in the top of the fifth. Dee Eppinger led off with a double, stole third and scored on a ground out by Kristen Tunno. After the Golden Rams responded with a run in their half of the fifth, the Crimson Hawks got back to 5-2 in the sixth when Michelle Bivona walked, went to third on an error and scored on a grounder by Jamie Palmerio. Sara Tripoli doubled as a pinch hitter to lead off the seventh. Jenny Rodgers re-entered to run for Tripoli and went to third on a ground out by Tunno. Jamie Fisher walked and Brittany Allman reached on an error, plating Rodgers and getting Fisher to third. Goettman followed with an RBI single, her second hit of the game, to chase home Fisher, but pinch hitter Shannon Battison hit into a fielder's choice to end the rally. Jenny Shaffer allowed nine hits and two earned runs in four innings. Erin Holloway fanned three in two innings of relief. Holloway started the first game and pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts but was outdueled by Ashley Saussaman, who allowed only three singles and struck out six. IUP plays another doubleheader against a PSAC East opponent on Tuesday when the Crimson Hawks visit Kutztown. |
