Kutztown scored four times with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and post a 5-1 victory over IUP to complete a sweep of a doubleheader Tuesday. The Golden Bears (23-5) won a pitcher's duel in the first game, getting a shutout from Katlin Arbogast in a 3-0 victory. IUP dropped to 4-14 on the season. The Crimson Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap when Brittany Allman doubled and scored on a Kristen Tunno single. IUP still had runners on first and second with nobody out before three ground outs enabled Kutztown to escape without any further damage. It stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Golden Bears tied it on a solo home run by Caitlin Hague. Until that round tripper, Erin Holloway had held Kutztown to only one hit through the first four frames. IUP got a leadoff double from Sam Goettman in the fourth and Sara Tripoli singled to start the sixth, but the Crimson Hawks couldn't dent the plate in either inning. The first two Golden Bears reached in the bottom of the sixth against relief pitcher Jenny Shaffer, but a double play put IUP within one out of getting out of the jam. Shaffer could not get that final out, however, as Krista Tedjeske singled in the tiebreaking run and Hague doubled in another to make it 3-1. An error allowed two more runs to come across to cap the Kutztown uprising. In the first game, Arbogast gave up only two singles and struck out eight in blanking IUP. Shaffer went the distance for the Crimson Hawks and allowed six hits while fanning four in six innings. The Crimson Hawks travel to Slippery Rock on Friday at 2:30 and Edinboro on Saturday at 1:00 in their first two PSAC West doubleheaders of the season. |
