IUP scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to rally past Edinboro 3-2 and gain a split of a PSAC West doubleheader Friday at Podbielski Field. The Fighting Scots defeated the Crimson Hawks 2-1 in the opening game.

The split keeps the Crimson Hawks in third place in the PSAC West, one game ahead of Edinboro. IUP is 13-21 overall and 9-5 in the division while Edinboro is 16-14 and 8-6 in conference play.

Lock Haven leads the division with a 13-1 record while California is second at 10-4. The top three teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the PSAC playoffs. Both IUP and Edinboro face the bottom two teams in the PSAC West Saturday with the Crimson Hawks traveling to Clarion (0-14) and Edinboro visiting Slippery Rock (2-12).

IUP banged out three hits and took advantage of an Edinboro error to score its two runs in the fifth and take its first lead of the doubleheader. Beth Dunsmoor single but was forced at second on a grounder by Michelle Bivona. Kristen Tunno then reached on an error to move Bivona to third.

After Vanessa Rose struck out Dee Eppinger for the second out, she unleashed a wild pitch to plate Bivona with the tie run. Alex Daughenbaugh then doubled to chase home Tunno and put the Crimson Hawks in front. An error by Dunsmoor with two outs in the seventh put the tie run in scoring position, but she got Rose to fly out to left to end the game.

Dunsmoor pitched a four-hitter and struck out seven without issuing a walk in earning her third win of the season. She was staked to a 1-0 lead in the first when Eppinger singled, moved to third on the first double of the game by Daughenbaugh and scored on a error. All three IUP runs off Rose were unearned.

In the first game, IUP was done in by the pitching of Rose and the power of Edinboro second baseman Dana Webb. Rose allowed only four hits and one unearned run, did not walk a batter and fanned eight in outdueling Crimson Hawk ace Erin Holloway. Holloway fanned 12 Fighting Scots and gave up only four hits but two of them left the park.

Webb hit solo homers in the first and seventh innings, both with two outs, to give Edinboro a 2-0 lead. Webb also had a two-out triple in the first but was stranded. Her second homer proved to be an important insurance run for the Fighting Scots when IUP threatened to pull out the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Sam Goettman reached on an error and Sara Tripoli doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Another error on a grounder by Holloway scored Goettman and put the tie run on third. But Rose was able to retire the final two batters of the game to preserve the Edinboro win.
