April 19, 2008 Game 1 Boxscore Game 2 Boxscore Erin Holloway pitched her second career no-hitter and struck out 14 in a 10-0 win in the first game and then worked two shutout innings in an 8-5 victory in the nightcap as IUP moved into second place in the PSAC West with a doubleheader sweep at Clarion. IUP is 11-5 in the division, one game ahead of third place California and three in front of fourth place Edinboro with only four regular season games remaining. The top three teams qualify for the PSAC playoffs. The Crimson Hawks are 15-21 overall. In the opening game, Holloway reached double figures in strikeouts for the sixth time in her past seven starts and has a total of 95 over that stretch. The only two base runners for Clarion (3-24, 0-16 PSAC West) came two walks. In the process, Holloway became the single season strikeout leader in IUP history with 178, five more than Julie Giacomin in 2000. Alex Daughenbaugh led the offense with a pair of two-run doubles, including one in the sixth inning when IUP scored five runs to invoke the 10-run rule. Brittany Allman hit a home run and drove in two runs while Sara Tripoli had two RBI singles. Kristen Tunno, Sam Goettman and Michelle Bivona also pitched in with two hits as the Crimson Hawks had 13 in the game. IUP was apparently on its way to an easy second game win, building a 5-0 lead after 4 ½ innings. Goettman walked and scored in the second, doubled and came around to score in the fourth and drove in two runs with a single in a three-run fifth. But the Golden Eagles rebounded with two in their half of the fifth and tied it in the sixth on a three-run homer by Caitlin Lamison. Holloway came in to start the seventh and allowed a one-out double to Carlie Cook before slamming the door shut. IUP then put three runs on the board in the eighth. Tunno doubled with one out and scored the winning run on a single by Dee Eppinger. Goettman singled for her third hit and third RBI of the game and Tripoli doubled in a run to cap the uprising. Holloway then struck out side in the bottom of the eighth for her second win of the day. IUP finishes its regular season with a pair of tough road trips. The Crimson Hawks are at California on Friday at 3:00 and at Lock Haven on Saturday at 2:30 as they look to wrap up a spot in the PSAC playoffs. |
