April 25, 2008 Game 1 Boxscore Game 2 Boxscore Sara Tripoli homered, doubled and drove in two runs and Sam Goettman and Erin Holloway also knocked in a pair to lead IUP to a 6-2 victory over host California in the opening game of a PSAC West doubleheader Friday to clinch a berth in the conference playoffs. The Vulcans came back to blank the Crimson Hawks 6-0 in the nightcap behind the shutout pitching of Maria Greco. The split leaves IUP in second place in the PSAC West with a record of 12-6, one game ahead of California. Lock Haven is the division champion and will host the conference playoffs next week. IUP (16-22 overall) finishes the regular season Saturday at Lock Haven while California (25-13) hosts Slippery Rock. Should the Crimson Hawks and Vulcans finish tied for second after Saturday's games, California will be the No. 2 seed out of the West on the strength of three wins in four games against IUP. In the first game, Holloway evened her record at 9-9 in winning for the seventh time in her past nine decisions. She allowed four hits, walked four and struck out six. She helped her own cause with a two-run double in the third that expanded IUP's lead to 3-0. The Crimson Hawks had scored a run in the first on a fielder's choice grounder by Tripoli. Still leading 3-1 in the fifth, Tripoli blasted a one-out solo homer to left center, her second of the season, to make it a three-run game. A single by Kristen Tunno, who went 3-for-4 in the game, and an error set the stage for a two-run double by Goettman that gave IUP breathing room at 6-1. The second game was dominated by Greco although IUP did mange to get six hits against her, including three by Dee Eppinger, but the Crimson Hawks stranded nine runners. |
