May 2, 2008 Erin Holloway blanked California on only two hits while striking out 14, and IUP scored on a Vulcan error in the bottom of the ninth to give the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 victory in an elimination game at the PSAC tournament. IUP (17-25) will meet the winner of the game between East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg Friday afternoon at 4:30. The Crimson Hawks lost to the Huskies in their opening game of the tournament. California pitcher Sonia Petrosoniak matched Holloway zero-for-zero through the first eight innings, allowing only one hit going into the ninth. But Brittany Allman singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a bunt single by Kristen Tunno. Dee Eppinger followed with a grounder to short that turned into the winning play for the Crimson Hawks. Vulcan shortstop Merissa Daley tried to force Tunno at second but threw the ball into right field and Allman came around without a throw to keep IUP alive. Holloway walked two batters in the first inning, her only two free passes in the game, and the runners moved up on a passed ball. But Holloway struck out Deanna Valentino and Nicole Bellevance to end the threat. California also put runners on first and second with one out in the third and got a leadoff double in the top of the ninth but were unable to dent the plate in either inning. Holloway struck out at least two batters in five of the nine innings and fanned the side in the second. She improved her record to 11-10 on the season and has won nine of her past 12 decisions. Petrosoniak had a no-hitter working until Sara Tripoli singled to lead off the IUP eighth. The only other Crimson Hawk baserunner through the first seven innings was a walk issued to Shannon Battison in the second. |
